Concierge
중세시대 성(城)의 초를 관리한 촛불관리자를 의미하는 프랑스어 comte des cierges에서 유래했다. 19세기 유럽 호텔산업이 발달하면서 고객을 맞고 객실 열쇠를 관리하는 역할을 담당한 컨시어지는 이제 호텔의 고급 고객 서비스를 담당하는 일종의 집사이자 매니저와도 같은 역할을 한다.
영화 귀여운 여인에서 드레스를 사러 로데오 거리로 간 콜걸 비비안(줄리아 로버츠)이 점원에게 모욕적 대접을 받고 쫓겨나오자 비비안이 묵고 있던 호텔 컨시어지가 등장한다. 헥터 엘리존도가 분한 컨시어지는 알고 지내던 부티크 매니저에게 비비안을 데려가 어울리는 옷을 사도록 돕고, 테이블 매너를 가르쳐준다.
최고급 숙박시설이자 최고 서비스를 요구하는 호텔이다보니 손님이 법적, 도의적으로 문제가 될 수 있는 요구를 해오는 경우가 아니라면 '절대 아니라고 말하지 않는다'를 원칙으로 한다. 문제가 되는 요구일 경우는 대신 돌려서 완곡하게 전달한다. 특히 서로 문화, 법규, 예절이 다른 외국인이 드나드는 곳이기 때문에 그 나라에서 문제가 되지 않는 것이라도 호텔이 있는 나라에서 불법인 경우가 있어서 이것을 조율하는 것이 중요한 과제이다.
컨시어지 업무는 호텔 투숙객이 필요로 하는 모든 서비스 제공하기로 요약된다. 우리나라에는 특1급 호텔에는 모두 있고, 외국의 경우 별 다섯 개 호텔 정도면 특급 서비스를 제공한다. 짐 들어주기와 신문 제공은 기본 중 기본. 관광, 레스토랑, 항공권, 렌터카, 리무진, 호텔차량 무료 서비스, 각종 문화공연행사 안내와 예약을 컨시어지에게 부탁하면 가장 빠르고 경제적으로 해결할 수 있다. 백화점에서 산 물건을 교환하고 싶은데 시간이 없다! 이런 부탁도 해결하는 정도. 실제로 호텔 투숙객들에 한해서 만능해결사에 가까운 서비스를 하는 역할이다. 오죽하면 어떤 전직 호텔리어는 "컨시어지는 만화 속 집사같은 우아한 존재가 아니라 심부름꾼이다."라며 이들의 업무를 요약했다.
